On Thursday (5 March), students celebrated and shared their love of reading on World Book Day by taking part in a range of focused and fun educational activities.

One of the highlights of the day was when a group of students from ARK Kings Academy shared their love of reading with younger children from neighbouring ARK Rose Primary Academy. The older students grew in confidence as they read aloud to groups of children who listened to their every word. Louis Kenny, a year 7 student from ARK Kings Academy who read to ARK Rose Primary Academy pupils, said:

“I tried to pick a book that neither I nor the children had read. Zog was a good one. The children were really listening, well behaved and trying to take everything in. It made me feel happy that I am able to help people develop their skills. I would like to do this again in future as a volunteer.”

Another highlight of the day was a special whole school reading group over an extended lunch hour. Staff dressed as characters from Alice in Wonderland while English teacher Miss Davies read extracts from the children’s classic.

Mr Roger Punton, Principal, ARK Kings Academy, said:

"I am proud of the way our students have celebrated and shared their love of reading on World Book Day with flair and enthusiasm. I am particularly impressed with the students that volunteered to read to pupils at ARK Rose Primary Academy. Not only have they helped inspire younger children to read, but they have gained valuable confidence and experience which will help them succeed in their academic career."
