Ofsted and performance data
ARK Kings Academy was inspected by Ofsted in September 2014 and HMI returned to the academy in January 2015 for a monitoring visit.
During the January 2015 Section 8 Inspection the Inspector found that "Senior leaders and governors are taking effective action to tackle the areas requiring improvement."
The report clearly recognises the progress we have made at ARK Kings over recent months, such as the significant increase in GCSE results in summer 2014, and outlines those areas where we must focus our efforts in order to improve further.
Inspectors saw evidence that standards are improving, particularly in reading and mathematics – highlighted by the summer 2014 GCSE results which almost doubled those of the previous year. The achievements and progress of our students who are disabled, or who have special educational needs, was noted as being particularly good, and often better than students nationally.
“The new Principal has a clear vision for the academy and his ambitions are shared by the students, parents and staff.”
The inspectors are confident that the school leadership team has a clear focus on ensuring that students make the progress expected of them, and that staff are fully committed to rapidly raising standards. The report highlights that our teachers have strong relationships with our students and parents, and that the quality of teaching is improving across the academy.
“All the students who left the academy in 2014 at the end of Year 11 secured a place in further education, employment and training.”
Our range of enrichment activities was highlighted as a particular strength, alongside our broad and balanced curriculum. Also noted is our support for students in the next stage of their education or employment with all of our students who left at the end of Year 11 in 2014 securing a place in further education, employment or training.
“Students’ behaviour…is calm and purposeful.”
The behaviour of our students was another strength identified in the report with inspectors describing it as “calm and purposeful”. Attendance is also getting much better and parents and students alike agree that students are safe in the academy and that the work of the academy to keep students safe and secure is “good”.
ARK Kings will continue to work with other local schools run by the ARK network, including Birmingham’s St Alban’s Academy which is rated ‘outstanding’ by Ofsted, as we continue our journey towards outstanding.

Students were supported to make decisions based on a combination of their ability and interests. They were supported by their form tutors through Virtue and form time, and their applications were tracked using UCAS Progress. Students on the SEND register were given extra guidance from the SEN team and in many cases were accompanied on visits round the institutions by a member of Ark Kings staff. Equally, students with high prior attainment and with academic potential were encouraged to consider A-Levels and other Level 3 options.
