Geography

What is our Geography curriculum purpose and rationale at Ark Kings?
At Ark Kings, we aim to give students a broad understanding of the world in order to promote tolerance as well as an understanding of their role as a global citizen.

Pupils in the primary phase study a History/Geography topic each half term. Within these topics, threads of knowledge run through the curriculum – the topics are the vehicles for placing the threads in context. For example, in Geography, the concept of ‘resources’ is a recurring concept throughout the curriculum. Where appropriate within each topic, pupils develop their knowledge and understanding of this concept. This starts in the early years and develops up to Year 6 in order to give pupils the necessary conceptual understanding of geographical themes drawn upon in the secondary phase of their education.
Here is an example of how a knowledge thread runs through the Geography curriculum. For each topic, the thread is drawn upon through relevant substantive knowledge and a broader conceptual understanding is outlined. Resources Thread.pdf
Other geographical threads include farming/agriculture, space, place & scale, climate/weather, natural hazards, biomes, survival and growth.
