Purpose and rationale

Why do pupils at Ark Kings need to study PSHE?

By studying PSHE, pupils will understand how to develop attributes they need to thrive as individuals, family members and a citizen in modern society. They will learn how PSHE plays a big part in how action, consequences and opportunities can shape their lives and our society today. As a highly disadvantaged community, it is imperative non-academic knowledge, skills and outcomes feature heavily across our curriculum so they can embrace everyday challenges. They will understand how attributes such as resilience, self-esteem, risk-management, teamworking and critical thinking in the context of three core themes: health and wellbeing, relationships and living in the wider world (including economic wellbeing and aspects of careers education) can affect their life chances. Pupils will be accepting and tolerant of the wider community and world, developing high aspirations.

All through curriculum overview

The PSHE curriculum takes objectives from all three core themes, Health and Wellbeing, Relationships, living in the Wider World to form half-termly units, each of which responds to a ‘big question’. The overarching key questions act as the topic titles or themes and are shared with pupils to explain what they will be learning about that half term. PSHE can be taught as a stand-alone lesson, discreetly within your half termly units (wider curriculum links) or as part of an integrated curriculum theme.
