Our aims

At Ark Kings Academy, our Music curriculum strives towards the following aims:

  1. Pupils become proficient musicians and vocalists through singing, creating and composing, performing, listening to, reviewing and evaluating music
  2. Pupils study a broad and balanced range of artists, composers, genres and styles, allowing them to explore how music is created, produced and communicated

Pupils read, write and notate rhythms and melodies as they become more independent musicians with a specific focus on the musical elements of rhythm, texture instrumentation.

The Voice: 

Pupils develop vocal techniques exploring Beatboxing, Rap and Popular Song genres 

Spring

The Keyboard: 

Pupils learn basic hand positions and using the correct fingers for melodies while reading from music notation with a specific focus on technique and expression

Summer

Class Band 

Pupils learn to play as a Class Ensemble through learning the Keyboard, Guitar, Drums and Vocal parts preparing for a performance together.

Year 8

Autumn

Djembe Drumming: 

Pupils learn Djembe Drumming techniques exploring Call and Response, Structure and Composing ideas within a Drumming Ensemble

Spring

The Keyboard II: 

Pupils learn basic hand positions and using the correct fingers for melodies with added Bass lines and Chords in the Left-Hand part while reading from music notation with a specific focus on co-ordination and timing.

Summer

The Ukulele & Guitar: 

Pupils learn basic chord shapes on the Ukulele with a focus on Ensemble skills which then develop onto using basic chords on the Guitar in songs.

Year 9

Autumn

Class Band II: 

Pupils continue to develop their Class Band skills across Keyboards, Vocals, Guitar and Drums with a specific focus on song structure and the balance of parts

Spring

Composing using ‘Logic’ Software: 

Pupils learn how to record using ‘Logic’ software on the iMacs with a focus on arrangements and song structure. ‘Live’ instrumental parts are added to Loops via a connected MIDI Keyboard and associated instruments. 

Summer

Class Band III: 

Pupils continue to develop their Class Band skills across Keyboards, Vocals, Guitar and Drums with a specific focus on performing in smaller bands within the class

Year 10

Autumn

OCR GCSE Music 

Solo Performing: 

Pupils learn to play specific pieces on their chosen instrument or voice, learning harder pieces and developing their technique as they progress. 

Listening - General Music Theory: 

An introductory Theory course, covering Instruments of the Orchestra, instrumental techniques and effects and music notation. 

Spring

Solo Performing: 

Pupils continue learning to play specific pieces on their chosen instrument / voice, learning harder pieces and developing their technique as they progress and record their best versions of their pieces for their NEA. 

Listening - Rhythms of the World: 

Pupils learn the features of 7 musical cultures from around the world with a focus on instruments, the type of music performed and instrumental techniques. Pupils also learn about the cultures surrounding the different musical styles. 

Free Choice Composition: 

Pupils compose an original piece in a style of their own choosing and develop initial ideas using ‘Logic ’or ‘Sibelius’ software programmes.

Summer

Ensemble Performing: 

Pupils learn to play specific pieces on their chosen instrument as a member of a chosen ensemble / vocal group, learning different pieces and developing their technique as they progress. 

Listening - Conventions of Pop: 

Pupils learn about Rock ‘n’ Roll, Rock Anthems of the 1970s and 1980s plus the Popular Song from the 1990s and early 2000s. Pupils learn the key features of each genre and the main performers.  

Free Choice Composition: 

Pupils continue to compose an original piece in a style of their own choosing and develop all ideas into a completed piece of NEA for assessment.

Year 11

Autumn

OCR GCSE Music 

Ensemble Performing: 

Pupils continue learning to play specific pieces on their chosen instrument as a member of a chosen ensemble learning harder pieces and developing their technique as they progress and record their best versions of their pieces for their NEA. 

Listening - The Concerto Through Time: 

Pupils learn about how the Orchestra has developed over time through Baroque, Classical and Romantic Eras. Main composers and key features of the Concerto are compared across each period of music. 

Set Composition: 

Pupils compose an original piece from a range of starting stimuli in a style to match one of the given events. Pupils develop their ideas using ‘Logic ’or ‘Sibelius’ software programmes

Spring

Listening - Film & Video Game Music: 

Pupils learn about the key features of Film Music and how it needs to be appropriate for each film genre. Pupils also learn the key features in relation to the Elements of Music. The Area of Study also traces the development of Video Game music and how orchestral scores are included in modern games. 

Set Composition: 

Pupils continue to compose an original piece from a range of starting stimuli in a style to match one of the given events. Pupils develop their initial ideas using ‘Logic ’or ‘Sibelius’ software programmes and produce a score and recording of their completed piece that is appropriate for the chosen NEA task.

Summer

Listening Paper Revision & Final Examination: 

Pupils recap the 4 Areas of Study learnt during the course with a focus on Past Paper questions to learn how to answer each of the 8 set questions – 2 from each Area of Study in the Listening Paper sat in the Summer Term in June.
