Our aims
At Ark Kings Academy, our Music curriculum strives towards the following aims:
- Pupils become proficient musicians and vocalists through singing, creating and composing, performing, listening to, reviewing and evaluating music
- Pupils study a broad and balanced range of artists, composers, genres and styles, allowing them to explore how music is created, produced and communicated

Listening - Rhythms of the World: Pupils learn the features of 7 musical cultures from around the world with a focus on instruments, the type of music performed and instrumental techniques. Pupils also learn about the cultures surrounding the different musical styles. Free Choice Composition: Pupils compose an original piece in a style of their own choosing and develop initial ideas using ‘Logic ’or ‘Sibelius’ software programmes. |

Ensemble Performing: Pupils learn to play specific pieces on their chosen instrument as a member of a chosen ensemble / vocal group, learning different pieces and developing their technique as they progress. Listening - Conventions of Pop: Pupils learn about Rock ‘n’ Roll, Rock Anthems of the 1970s and 1980s plus the Popular Song from the 1990s and early 2000s. Pupils learn the key features of each genre and the main performers. Free Choice Composition: Pupils continue to compose an original piece in a style of their own choosing and develop all ideas into a completed piece of NEA for assessment. |

Listening - The Concerto Through Time: Pupils learn about how the Orchestra has developed over time through Baroque, Classical and Romantic Eras. Main composers and key features of the Concerto are compared across each period of music. Set Composition: Pupils compose an original piece from a range of starting stimuli in a style to match one of the given events. Pupils develop their ideas using ‘Logic ’or ‘Sibelius’ software programmes |

Listening - Film & Video Game Music: Pupils learn about the key features of Film Music and how it needs to be appropriate for each film genre. Pupils also learn the key features in relation to the Elements of Music. The Area of Study also traces the development of Video Game music and how orchestral scores are included in modern games. Set Composition: Pupils continue to compose an original piece from a range of starting stimuli in a style to match one of the given events. Pupils develop their initial ideas using ‘Logic ’or ‘Sibelius’ software programmes and produce a score and recording of their completed piece that is appropriate for the chosen NEA task. |
